Proboscis Discovery

A bee’s tongue, called a proboscis is long and pointy, so is yours if you stick it out as far as you can. Their tongue is soft like yours too. Bees need long tongues so that they can reach into flowers to where the nectar is.

Their tongue works like a straw. The bee unrolls it's tongue and dips it into a flower. Then sucks up the nectar like you would drink from a straw.

Bees will also use their tongues like a cat to lick their fur to keep themselves clean. They lick and clean each other and their mother the queen. Their tongues are also used like brooms to lick the inside of their hive to keep it clean.

Here we are using straws to experiment what it would be like be a bee using a proboscis. 

We had a competition to see which group could suck up the most water in 2 minutes.

It was a lot of fun!

This is our hexagon wall display. We cut out the hexagons by 

ourselves and made some bees to go on it. 

Which bees do you think are doing the waggle dance?

Which bees do you think are the worker bees?

What are the bees on the flowers doing?

We explored the hidden shapes and patterns found in a beehive.

 We made the beehive with lots of shapes.

When we ran out of hexagon shapes...

we discovered that 6 triangles make a hexagon.

And that 3 diamonds make a hexagon.

We also had some shapes that we didn’t know what they were.

Mrs Laburn told us they were trapeziums.

Well... 2 trapeziums make a hexagon.

Insect Art

How we made our Insect art.

First we drew an insect based on our insect knowledge.

To achieve the success criteria it had to have three body parts,

 a thorax, an abdomen and a head. 

It also had to have 6 legs drawn from the thorax and 2 antennae. 

Once we were finished drawing we outlined our pencil drawing 

with a vivid maker pen and then cut out the insects.

We then dabbed very bright dye colours onto a thick paper towel. 

The colours spread beautifully!

Lastly we glued our insects on to the dry colourful paper towel.

Here is our finished art. We think they look fabulous!

Handwriting Formation

Today we had a big practise writing the lowercase e. Our learning intention was to concentrate on the correct formation. We practised and practised on our whiteboards. Then we self assessed and ticked which e we thought was the best one we had written to achieve our success criteria.

I see a caterpillar spinning a cocoon around him. He will turn into a butterfly that drinks nectar. I think the caterpillar is going to be a butterfly soon. The caterpillar grows wings inside the cocoon. I wonder how the butterfly flies to the flower to have a drink? By Krishant
