I am in favor of the silver fern. I think it's a great change and will definitely differentiate between other countries. The fern leaf has been widely recognized to signify "New Zealandness" for over a century and the emblem is on the badge of most army units. So, what's wrong with a little change?

After reading some of the other votes I think I am out numbered but I like the traditional flag. Although I do agree with John the black and silver one would be better without New Zealand written on it.

I really like the Black flag with the white fern, but it would be cool if it didn't have the words. I live how it separates us from the other countries under the British rule.

Hello, I am a student in EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama, and I chose the black flag with the silver fern leaf. Honestly, a flag that has such commonly-used symbols, such as the Union Jack and red/white stars, although important, can be indistinguishable, at least at a glance, from other countries. Like the flag of Japan, just a white flag and a red circle, the new choice is simple and very distinct. I would know it was New Zealand's flag at a glance! Awesome!!

I like the blue flag because it has the red and white stars and it has meaning. The white means peace and honesty. The red means strength and bravery. The Southern Cross represents the countries in the southern hemisphere only they can see the stars. Our flag has four stars on it.
