Sketching Portraits

We've had a wonderful two days back at school and couldn't wait to get something up on our walls.
These are our half portrait sketches. This is a great way to get started learning how to sketch.
Check out some of our closeups.

Animal Pattern Art - Camouflage and Mimicry

Last term we learnt how animal patterns help animals survive.
We also visited the Auckland Zoo to see animals in their habitats.
Lots of the animals were camouflaged or used mimicry in their environments.
Check out this slideshow we found online.

Making our Pirate Ship

Over the last few weeks Room 3 children have been helping each other to make the pirate ship to go alongside the Pirate Cove.
Our Pirate Cove is one of the secret spaces in our classroom where the children can go to be alone, choose to go to learn in a quiet place or work with a small group of children.
The pirate ship was traced onto cardboard using the IWB, outlined with marker and then painted.
Everyone had a turn at making the ship.
What secret spaces do you have in your classroom?

Pirates of the Caribbean - Clever Pirate Art

Before we started drawing our pirates we practised how to draw faces based on Stu Duval’s drawings.
We also learnt how to use our hands to measure the size of our heads.
And then we learned how to draw hats on peoples heads. They don’t just sit right on top of your head!
Then we were ready to go.
We got a buddy to trace around our hands and feet and then we added our heads, faces and a simple body.
Next we added all our pirate details.
And finally we created our pirate names.
Which is your favourite pirate?

Pirates Classroom Treaty

Kids with a view are integrating Pirates into their
Term 1 learning about
Responsibilities in our Colourful World.

They learnt why responsibilities, rules and agreements are in place and why they are important to follow.
The children brainstormed ideas that would help each other to be in a happy, smoothy run classroom.
Everyone thought very carefully and
came up with a lot of excellent ideas.
The word PIRATE was then used to form an acrostic treaty.
The children made pirate handprints
in place of signing the treaty.
This was to show commitment to respect,
agreement and a promise to work and learn together.

Happy Father's Day Dad

What Is A Dad?
A Dad is a person who is loving and kind,
And often he knows what you have on your mind.
He's someone who listens, suggests, and defends -
A dad can be one of your very best friends!
He's proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong,
A dad can be patient and helpful and strong
In all that you do, a Dad's love plays a part -
There's always a place for him deep in your heart.
And each year that passes, you're even more glad,
More grateful and proud just to call him your dad!

                           Author unknown

Happy Father's Day to all our Dad's
love from us.
We hope you like your new tie!

Check out our Dads comments about their ties!

Insect Art

How we made our Insect art.
First we drew an insect based on our insect knowledge.
To achieve the success criteria it had to have three body parts,
a thorax, an abdomen and a head.
It also had to have 6 legs drawn from the thorax and 2 antennae.
Once we were finished drawing we outlined our pencil drawing
with a vivid maker pen and then cut out the insects.
We then dabbed very bright dye colours onto a thick paper towel.
The colours spread beautifully!
Lastly we glued our insects on to the dry colourful paper towel.
Here is our finished art. We think they look fabulous!
What do you think?
