Phonics Phones

Room 3 was really lucky enough to have one of our parents donate 25 "phonics phones".Thanks Darren.Phonics phones are PVC piping that acts like a telephone.Room 3 use them during SSR, reading group time and writing time. The children do not need to speak loudly but can hear themselves clearly while speaking. The phonics phones are particularly wonderful during writing time as the children can hear themselvessounding out tricky words that they are attempting to phonetically sound and spell. The sounds are more prominent and accentuated enabling the children to more easily spell words as they sound.During reading time a group can go off (in the secret garden or other secret space) and read into a phonics phone, hear themselves clearly and at the same time not disturb others working. The phonics phone also improves their focus and ability to stay on task.
(Look Preps K and S it was wacky hair and wacky hat day!)

I love the phones Kids with a View. What a great way to listen to yourselves reading! You have very clever parents at your school. Can you tell me about your secret garden? I think my preps would love to have a Phonics Phone and a secret garden to read in.
Great reading everyone.

PS Did I notice some groovy hats and hairstyles in your video?

Wow! Room 3 I have not seen Phonics phones before but they sound like a great idea - especially for writing and sounding out words - it can be very tricky to hear the sounds in words. Thanks for sharing.
I love your crazy hair and hats! I can see a very colourful hat with lots of flowers.

Wow, what an interesting idea. I think it is great to have such a clever tool to help you hear the sounds when reading and spelling and how cool is it that you can do this without disturbing one another.

Do you think it has helped you to hear the words more clearly?

From James and his mum (from Prep S).

This is a wonderfully simple idea to enable children to clearly hear themselves speak in a crowded room.

How do you put videos on the blog Mrs Laburn?

What an amazing tool. I wonder if we have them in England. Because my pupils are much older than you are, I've never heard of them. I will have to investigate because I really want to try one out.

Hi James and his mum!
Thanks for taking the time to comment on our blog!
Yes phonics phones definitely help the children to hear the words more clearly in fact they can hear beginning, middle and end sounds.
We hope you are having a fantastic holiday!

That sounds really cool and I would love to try it even if I am in year 8. It would be really cool to be able to listen to your own voice while you read. I wish our school would get some.

Hi Helen
Yes they are totally fabulous - we use them everyday! You can get the parts from a hardware store. They are just PVC piping.
Thanks for checking out our blog!
